With speakers including Weta Digital (responsible for LOTR effects), Delaware, ILM, Resfest and Devilrobots IdN's my favorite conference 2004 taking place in Singapore in a coupla days is taking an eclectic approach to moving image creativity, alongside fields from fashion, advertising and graphic design....

Machinista 2004

Following from the original edition in 2003 founded in Perm, Russia [1386km east of Moscow] Machinista is a migrating festival exploring, celebrating and questioning the ideas of "artificial intelligence in the arts" and "human-machine interaction". machinista.org features contributions to the 2004 Machinista festival in Glasgow, 7-9 May. This year's edition includes intriguing 'machine-vision' pieces such as (Remote) Mind - The Strangers are still me by Muehleck & Rauch, a DVD installation piece using a 3D medical scanner to capture facial data, to look at how visual representations of memory can be understood....

Bluespoon generative visuals

Blue Spoon recently completed providing a striking set of generative visuals for the London Sinfonietta, Squarepusher, Jamie Lidell tour, a worthy unofficial touring sequel to London's annual Ether festivals which combine modernist classical works with contemporary electronica. Of particular note was a twitching, convulsing hyperrealistic 'Sam head', and a lush evolving web of neural networks. Other visuals were provided by Flat-e and Pablo Fiasco, whose sampling and live video effects filming complemented Jamie Lidell's standout and flamboyant vocal performance expertly. Making music look good

An interesting selection of MVPA award nominees for 2004 have been announced celebrating the best in music video production. Full mvpa nominees 2004 are listed on the official website. British Animation Awards 2004 imminent

While it still has quite an old-school veneer, the vanguard of digital animation talent is starting to become increasingly represented in the shortlists for the British Animation Awards 2004. Creative Commons moving image winners

While the Oscar triumph of Lord of the Rings may have actually been a reward for radical filmmaking (the integration and reliance on digital effects and performances in the Trilogy being genuinely groundbreaking) - rather than the usual Academy Award fudge - probably the most significant award of the last few days actually went to the winner of the Creative Commons Moving Image Contest Winners. Netmage festival 04

netmage04 styles itself as a festival showcasing creative and innovative images in art, media, communication. The latest edition ran from 21-24 January, in Bologna, Italy. The last few editions saw it gain a reputation for live moving image/VJ awards. BAFTA Computer Game Award results

The BAFTA interactive festival came to an end last night with their Computer Game awards. No surprises, the big winner of the night (and a victory for open-ended sandbox gaming) was Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, although it was pipped to Best Game of the Year by Call of Duty. Eyebeam Atelier .mov show

Still time to catch Eyebeam exhibition January 6 - 24, 2004 starting the year: Eyebeam NYC presents the first group exhibition from its Moving Image Studios. The exhibition features work produced in 2003 by four post-graduate Production Artists, as well as commissioned projects by Isaac Julien and Fred Wilson that the Production Artists helped to create. Documentation of the commissioned work will be on hand to describe the studio's production process....
