Virtual worlds are skinning the cinematic

The cinematic experience is invading virtual worlds. And in turn virtual worlds are starting to invade the cinematic. I’m starting to think about this increasingly after seeing Doug Gayeton’s presentation when I was talking at at Short Ride a Fast Machine in Amsterdam. Stylistically this is happening slowly, but in terms of subject-matter this is [...]

Afterworld isolated

A cross between classic cult film Soylent Green and acclaimed The Last Man graphic novels ….
Afterworld is an innovative hybrid animation that’s designed to work between online and television spaces. US viewers can currently watch regular episodes on YouTube (they locked off the preview episodes some time ago, once they’d locked their Sony deal), International [...]

Fairtrade in World of Warcraft?

Fantastic use of machinima medium, with this wry video highlighting Fairtrade and the inequities of exploiting farmers/cheap labour from Strange Company. Funny, slickly produced, and gets the message across. Hugh and Johnnie from Strange Company are also currently blogging their activities finishing the Machinima for Dummies book.

Bloodspell casts machinima in new light

The final part of Bloodspell is the culmination of a thrilling machinima epic by Hugh Hancock’s pioneering Strange Company. The first ever machinima feature is a medieval swords and sourcery epic that ups the ante for the next evolutions in the discipline. Filmed in realtime using the 3D game engine of Neverwinter Nights, it has [...]

Video virtually overwhelms Turner prize

The Tate’s annual Turner Prize for contemporary art is both firmly screen-based, and politically charged this year. Tagged as a shortlist of buildings and battles by The Guardian, they seem to miss the point that it marks the clear renaissance and reinvigoration of video art, while also in the case of Langlands & Bell–whose [...]

EA have teamed with ace machinima team Rooster Teeth Productions to showcase the virtual filmmaking capabilities of its newSims 2 release. Machinima takes another step to mainstreaming…
Episode 0, the trailer introduction to the new machinima sitcom The Strangerhood, is now online. Derived from the Sims 2 computer game engine. By the team behind the hit [...]

Machinima meets MTV

Video Mods is a new show on MTV 2 melding machinima and music video to hit that all-important computer-game playing demographic. Actually good to see the U.S. cabler continuing to take on new animation trends. Reversioning contemporary promos may not be as interesting as reimagining early effects-deprived music videos but it’s a start.
Video Mods clips [...]
