2005 from shortlists to winners

I finally finished the shortlists before the end of the year. No shortlists for MVP (Most valuable 2005 contribution from the above areas) or Breakthrough artist of the year categories necessary I feel as they may well come from those previously mentioned.
The New Year will see me make those difficult final choices.

Best moving image product 2005

OK I'm not including the PSP, Nintendo DS or Video iPod in this category because they are essentially moving image delivery devices.
I'm also not including any of my own books, or products I might be associated with or contributed to.

Channel H DVD, Hifana
Guero DVD, Beck
Rubber Johnny DVD, Chris Cunningham
Director's Label Series Vol.

Five from Brand New School

Yes, I am obsessed with lists right now.
So recently talking via Skype to Brand New School founder, Jonathan Notaro, and Creative Director, Jens Gehlhaar, I kind of found out their favorite 5 videos from 5 directors of the last 5 years.
The 5x5x5 goes something like this:
Gehlhaar: "You have to mention Michel Gondry, White Stripes, and Roman Coppola's Strokes videos.

Best visuals by a VJ/generative filmmaker 2005

From the ultra-minimalist, to the maximalist, the spontaneous and the ultra-considered:

Addictive TV
Eclectic Method
Hexstatic
Karl Kliem
UVA

Eclectic Method limited iPod download

Eclectic Method have released for a fortnight only, a mobile viewing ready version of the DVD:

We're not VJs, as iPod download [280 Mb MP4!]

A 35 minute mobile-ready mashup of their greatest visual hits, Eclectic Method's freeform cut and paste style is crowd pleasing in the extreme. Go get it while you can. It's just the eyeplay you need to get into a positive uptempo mood for the New Year.

Best motion graphics of 2005

I've deliberately taken a step back after years immersed in motion graphics so I haven't drawn on such extensive knowledge as I might have in the past for my Best motion graphics of 2005. With this caveat in place, the shortlist is thus:

Lightborne
Foret Bleue
nakd
Eduoard Salier
Arvind Palep

More live action/photorealistic hybrids here compared to the abstract tendency I may have been biased toward in the past.

Best interactive/installation 2005

Less full-on interaction here than I expected compiling, so I surprised myself in that this section became more about the interaction between the artworld and digital culture/moving image.

Amanita Design (Samorost)
Cory Arcangel (Welcome to my homepage artshow)
Janet Cardiff (Forty-Part Motet sound sculpture)
Toshio Iwai (Electroplankton for Nintendo DS)
Takashi Murakami (Little Boy: The Art of Japan’s Exploding Subculture)

Renaissance noir sci-fi animation

Christian Volckman's Renaissance looks like a sweet post-Sin City/Innocence sci-fi animation of the highest order using slick mocap and cel-shading. Go check the trailer. [Via Twitch]

Most innovative in video gaming 2005

The creators still pushing the videogame out of the comfort zone:

Lumines by Tetsuya Mizuguchi / Q Entertainment
Resident Evil 4 by Shinji Mikami / Capcom
The Movies by Peter Molyneux / Lionhead
Shadow of the Colossus by Fumito Ueda / SCEI
We Love Katamari by Keita Takahashi / Namco

My take on most original after all shortlists.

Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear Solid Blog

I adore the intimate posts like this one at Hideoblog, the online production journal of virtuoso videogame director Hideo Kojima. The way he talks about observing a leaf or a crow carcass slips you straight into his gameworlds..
